Smoke X is not meant to be used in place of a digital instant-read thermometer, such as a Thermapen ONE or a ThermoPop, or used with broiling.

X marks the spot
Love this probe. I have a regular smoke with the gateway that bought years ago, never was able to get the gateway to connect since my wifi is 5ghz and the gateway only works with 2.5 ghz. The Smoke struggled through walls to the point it only worked in the room next to the outside wall where the grill sat. Plus you need an app. This solves all my problems. No app needed and I can go anywhere in my house and stay connected. If you are looking for a great thermometer with excellent range, don't bother with the regular Smoke and grab one of these X models instead.

PROBES ARE JUNK.
Accurate when works, 4 failed meat probes on 5 smokes in 11 months. Smoker never saw higher than 300 degrees. Was told by customer service "probes warrantied for six months because they take a beating like car tires". Funny, the only probe that still works is the one that get the biggest beating, the ambient air probe. Sorry but if I knew going in I was dropping nearly $200 then spending $80 a year one probes I would have spent my money elsewhere.

Buy this!
I had (and still have) the original Smoke that uses 2 probes but I wanted this Smoke X Long Range because it allows you to use 4 probes at once. It's a bity smaller than the original unit, but it packs a punch. Combined with my old unit, I can now simultaneously cook 6 butts on the smoker and have accurate temp readings/alarms, etc.
I just used the Smoke X for the first time and it is such a great addition. Well made, easy to use. The receiver range really is quite impressive. I like the accuracy, build quality and excellent customer service.

Can cn not beat Thermoworkks products.
I started doing BBQ competitions 2005 I saw a lot of people with thermopen. I didn't want to pay $100 for a temp probe. My daughter bought me one for fathers day 2008.
I love it.
No one can tough their customer service. I now have 4 thermopem ( 2 classic and 2 One) plus 3 thermopop. I also own This SmokeX4 which is awesome I just bought my brother this smoke X4 and a thermopen I hate jelly beans ......... my wife never opens my package unless its from Thermowork to get her jelly beans :-)

Needs minor adjustments on software
I have had this unit for a few years. Thermoworks was kind enough to replace my first unit which didn't seem to work with billows. The one comment I would have is to set the sound last because once you select to mute sounds then you select temp and adjust temp, the sound goes back to default on then you need to select channel and go through the programing process again and mute it. Otherwise, this is a must have for every BBQ addict.

Smoke X 4 channel is Awesome
I already had the 2x and it worked flawless. Had a family event to cook for and needed more probes. The 4 channel worked as good as my 2 channel. I trust only Thermoworks for reading temp on the meats I'm cooking.

Very Happy!
Really like my Smoke X. Both the main unit and receiver are built very well. They have a lot of heft to them and the magnets are very strong so no worry about them giving out. I really enjoy the 4 ports and the ambient probe it comes with. I just bought the Billows fan to round it out! Really loving all my new ThermoWorks products.

Overall good product, but doesn't integrate well with accessories
Overall, I like this product even though I have only used it once as of this review.

The probes are easy to use. I like the fact that I can take the temp in multiple parts of the meat and "average" for doneness.

The chirps are very loud. The unit won't recognize the Billows accessory at all. The different temperature settings take a few minutes to figure out,

Fan integration

Is there a way to turn off the remote? I constantly remove a battery to do so.

Yes, you can turn off the Receiver. To power it off, press and hold the power button down for 3 seconds. (It is not a quick press, as it is to turn the Receiver on or to turn the backlight on.)

What is the difference between the Smoke & the Smoke X2? Just the radio & range?

There are a number of differences between Smoke and Smoke X2 as Smoke X2 is newer and has many new features and improvements. The two most important differences include Smoke X2’s dramatically increased transmission range and its inclusion of control circuitry for ThermoWorks’ optional fan, Billows (sold separately).

1. Smoke X2 uses an all-new RF wireless technology with the strongest and longest signal available. Smoke X2's range is 6,562 feet (1.24-mile) line-of-sight; Smoke's range is 300 line-of-sight.

2. Smoke X 2 includes control circuitry to run the optional Billows fan; Smoke does not.

Here's a comparison article that includes feature information and videos:

https://help.thermoworks.com/knowledge-base/smoke-vs-smoke-x2/

Is the water resistance improved over the original Smoke?
How much of thenprobe needs to be inserted into the item being cooked?

The temperature sensor is at the very tip of the probe, so you only need to insert it until it reaches the coolest spot which is generally in the center of the meat.

Just received the Smoke X4. I see it has two metal tabs on the back. Is this for a charge station?

Those are magnets.

I have two questions, one is do you get much warning when the batteries get low, I was thinking about long low temp cooks over night, I would hate for the battery to die in the middle of the night and me not know it? The other is related, if I am using the smoke x2 with the billows which requires a power connection is the smoke x2 still relying on the batteries or is it getting power from the same place the billows is ?

Smoke X2’s batteries will last approximately 330 hours, so you will have plenty of time to complete an overnight cook. When you are using the 12V AC Adapter, all of the power needed to run Billows and Smoke X2 come from the power source the Adapter is plugged into. The batteries are not involved at that point.

Can this also be used in an indoor oven?

Yes, it sure can!

Will the smoke x2 and x4 have wifi capability like the smoke with the gateway?

No, Smoke X2 and Smoke X4 will not have Wi-Fi capability.

What is the warranty for the Smoke X4 thermometer?
could this be used to monitor room temperature?

Yes, this can be used to monitor room temperature. It can accurately monitor any temperature between the probe's specs, -58 to 572°F (-50 to 300°C).
