Dead after a month.
Bought on the 13th of January, used it maybe half a dozen times and all of the buttons stopped working. They're clicky membrane buttons and they're all stuck down (in the pressed position).

More than adequate for our needs
My husband, a retired chemist, who chose this instrument, had a heck of a time calibrating it. Perhaps it was because the electrode had not sat in storage solution long enough after we received it. Also, it did not come with storage solution or calibration buffers, something we did not realize when we ordered. It works fine now. We use it to check pH of ferments and sauces for canning. I believe a simpler (and less expensive) instrument would have been adequate for us.

Defective
This has never worked reliably from day 1. Dont waste your money and more importatntly your time.
Thermoworks this product is a blight against your otherwise good name. Something needs to be done about this terrible product and user experience.

Long overdue purchase
Great product. Seemed easy to calibrate. Fits well in the hand. Just used it to make a batch of gardenaire. Glad I got it, should have purchased a long time ago.

Lots of troubles
When the ph meter arrived I had lots of trouble getting it to calibrate. I never could get a 3 point calibration. Even talked to customer support. We finally got a 2 point calibration. I have bedn storing in storage solution & calibrating before each use. Today, impossible to calibrate. Going to replace the probe and try again. But I’d think the probe would last longer than a month. I have cheaper lower quality meters that seem to work better. Not sure this thing is worth having.

It’s a nice device but I feel the instructions could be clearer. Still very happy with my purchase.

8689 pH meter
Bought the meter in January 2020 and have only used it maybe 4-5 times. Out of the box it would not calibrate to pH 7 buffer solution and would lock at 6.88. Subsequent cal procedure in pH 4 buffer solution would converge on the correct pH. In both cases the delay in achieving "calibration" was inordinately long (many minutes). I am experienced with pH usage and never use it on hot wort, only cooled samples. Always store in KCl solution. Insult to injury is when the issue is raised to customer service all I have heard is crickets. Not satisfied at all. Only bought this meter based on a Brulosophy review. I suggested to them that they need to revisit the evaluation and recommendation. Converted from an Extech meter and obviously made the wrong choice.

VERY Poor Performance
I have been using this for about a week or so. I have yet to see it stabilize, even once, when measuring a pH. I takes forever (minutes per point) to calibrate; the calibration rarely works at the 10.00 point. It can't measure the pH of the calibration buffers correctly immediately following calibration. I have used many pH meters in the past; this one just plain doesn't work!

Why did you choose this?

To replace the one that I had for Cheesemaking.

I am a homebrewer and have never tracked or measured my pH. I want better control over my wort and beermaking.

When calibrating, do I just let the meter auto-calibrate and ignore buffer pH value and temp? Or do I have to set the meter to the buffer pH value (i.e. 7.01) and should I compensate for solution temp as well? The manual is not very clear.

When calibrating the pH meter, you will need to dial in the correct value for the buffer solution. Typically, the number that comes up when calibrating 7 is 6.86. Use the up and down arrows to manually enter 7.01 (or the correct pH for your solution). The same is true for the 4 (4.01) and 10 (9.18). The meter will complete the calibration automatically if the reading is stable enough, which may take up to 2 minutes. Always calibrate in the pH 7 buffer solution first and then move to either the 4 or 10 buffer solution.

Up to what degree Fahrenheit will this instrument perform Automatic Temperature Correction? 122F or 140F?

The 140ºF was an incorrect specification. We have updated our website with the correct information. Thank you for pointing this out. Just to clarify, the Automatic Temperature Compensation will work up to 122ºF. This is also the environmental limit of the entire meter.

Will this work with high viscosity things, like thick sauces or mayonnaise?

Not very well. We would recommend mixing the high viscosity liquids, such as thick sauces or mayonnaise, with distilled water to create a slurry for testing.

What is the best way to store the buffer solutions - at room temperature, or in the fridge?

You should store buffer solutions in a cool place and use them at room temperature.

Can this meter be used to test pH of salami?

You will want to purchase the 4.0 and 7.0 buffer solutions as salami is on the acidic side of the pH scale. When using any pH meter, it is recommended that you calibrate it regularly. If you use it every day, you should calibrate once every morning. I would suggest starting with the "Starter Kit" when looking at the pH buffers: https://www.thermoworks.com/ph-calibration-buffers/

What is the SA code when I try to calibrate? I can't find what it means in the manual or online

When you are calibrating your device, you need to leave your thermometer in the solution until it reads "SA". Once it displays that code, you are free to move on to either your 4 or 10 buffer solution. This process may take up to 2 minutes.

Can this unit be used to test pool water regularly? If so is anyone using it for that purpose?

Yes, it can. Many customers purchase it for that purpose.

What is the best pH Meter for soil testing for gardens with the ability for water and breads?

This ph Meter (8689) will work well. You'll test liquids. When testing soil, make a slurry with soil and distilled water.

How often should the electrode be replaced?

It depends upon the amount of use and how well it is taken care of. Typically, the electrode will need to be replaced approximately once a year.

How do I change the temp reading from C to F?

The directions for changing the temp unit setting (C° or F °) can be found on page 7 in the manual. You can download the manual here:
