- IP65 Waterproof Housing
- Dual display with ATC
- Replaceable electrode*
- Pen size, easy to fit in pocket
- One touch auto calibration, 3 points
- Auto power-off
- °C/°F switchable
Our 8689 pH meter does everything that the expensive models do at an affordable price. You get auto temperature compensation, 3-point calibration, ±0.05 accuracy, IP65 water resistant rating, dual display, and replaceable electrode.
* One electrode is included with purchase. Additional replacements are available in the accessories section below.
Important to Know:
- 1. The electrode should be soaked in electrode storage solution before the first use.
- 2. The electrode should be stored with solution in the cap.
- 3. If unused for an extended period of time, the electrode needs to be rehydrated.
- 4. It is recommended to calibrate the meter regularly with calibration buffers.
Thermoworks this product is a blight against your otherwise good name. Something needs to be done about this terrible product and user experience.
When calibrating the pH meter, you will need to dial in the correct value for the buffer solution. Typically, the number that comes up when calibrating 7 is 6.86. Use the up and down arrows to manually enter 7.01 (or the correct pH for your solution). The same is true for the 4 (4.01) and 10 (9.18). The meter will complete the calibration automatically if the reading is stable enough, which may take up to 2 minutes. Always calibrate in the pH 7 buffer solution first and then move to either the 4 or 10 buffer solution.
The 140ºF was an incorrect specification. We have updated our website with the correct information. Thank you for pointing this out. Just to clarify, the Automatic Temperature Compensation will work up to 122ºF. This is also the environmental limit of the entire meter.
Not very well. We would recommend mixing the high viscosity liquids, such as thick sauces or mayonnaise, with distilled water to create a slurry for testing.
You should store buffer solutions in a cool place and use them at room temperature.
You will want to purchase the 4.0 and 7.0 buffer solutions as salami is on the acidic side of the pH scale. When using any pH meter, it is recommended that you calibrate it regularly. If you use it every day, you should calibrate once every morning. I would suggest starting with the "Starter Kit" when looking at the pH buffers: https://www.thermoworks.com/ph-calibration-buffers/
When you are calibrating your device, you need to leave your thermometer in the solution until it reads "SA". Once it displays that code, you are free to move on to either your 4 or 10 buffer solution. This process may take up to 2 minutes.
Yes, it can. Many customers purchase it for that purpose.
This ph Meter (8689) will work well. You'll test liquids. When testing soil, make a slurry with soil and distilled water.
It depends upon the amount of use and how well it is taken care of. Typically, the electrode will need to be replaced approximately once a year.
The directions for changing the temp unit setting (C° or F °) can be found on page 7 in the manual. You can download the manual here:

To replace the one that I had for Cheesemaking.
I am a homebrewer and have never tracked or measured my pH. I want better control over my wort and beermaking.
